A Decade of Change
cont.
Bred by Mrs Zoe Rhys from two Smooth Collies, Hughley Hush Puppy Blue gained his title in 1961, going on to found an important male line which was continued by grand-son Ch Peterblue Leader, and great-grandson Ch Peterblue Nigel.

Although Rough Collies still played an
important role in the breeding programme of
most kennels, breeders increasingly turned to
Smooth Collies when considering the male
line. Amongst the more important of these
we find tricolours,
Chs Wythenshawe
Windhover
, Peterblue Scallop and Peterblue Leader, plus blue merle champions Peterblue Nigel and Hughley Hush Puppy Blue.
Ch Redevalley Rosita of Ladypark, family B in the latest update of Smooth lines and families, and her numerous descendants continued to dominate the bitch lines. Chief amongst the remaining bitch families to exert their influence was Selskar’s Sablette,
family C, who is generally credited with re-establishing the sable and white colour in
the Smooth variety.
On a more general note only Wales was un-represented by its own regional Collie Society at the start of this decade, but before it was a couple of years old a group of South Wales resident members of West of England Collie Society had gained Kennel Club recognition for their own society. Yorkshire Collie Club was another regional breed society that hit the headlines during this period, publishing the first of what proved to be an unprecedented run of twenty one annual year or handbooks, each detailing the principal events of the previous year along with the dates of shows for the coming years. Funded by kennel advertisements, and including articles on a variety of subjects of interest to collie fanciers these volumes now supply a unique insight into the depth of quality during the period of their publication.
