Of the newer kennels Mrs George’s
BEULAH kennel did particularly well,
winning 21 Challenge Certificates
with 8 different Rough Collies, five
of which added the champion
preffix.
For some reason Smooth fanciers have always been more ready to campaign their Collies throughout their lives, amassing large numbers of tickets, and whilst the 30s did not produce any record breakers, it would have been difficult with only 37 sets of CCs spread over the whole decade, Mr Stansfield did campaigned his blue merle dog Laund Lanry to his title before transferring him to Mrs Pleydell Bouverie in whose ownership he added a further eleven Challenge Certificates making a total of 14, thereby elevated Lanry to the Smooth Collie’s top winner spot for the decade.
The war, which came at the end of this period, also makes assessing the influence of breeding lines difficult. Many breeders evacuated some of their more important Collies to the relative safety of America, until the hazards of the journey were tragically and dramatically highlighted by the torpedoing of the ‘City of Benares’, an evacuee ship carrying children to Canada, despite it being clearly marked as a Red Cross vessel. After this breeders were more content to let their stock share their war time hazards.
