Smooth Collie fortunes were largely left in the
capable hands of Messrs F. Wildgoose’s CANUTE,
R. Anderson’s SALTAIRE and the LAUND kennel.
New fanciers to join Collie ranks introduced a
wider geographical spread with Messrs F. W. Ball BACKWOODS, A. L. Hayter ATHELNEY,
R. H. Roberts ASHTEAD, E. C. Pierce ELTHAM PARK, George Archer WHITELEA, and
Mr & Mrs Newbery ALPHINGTON, in Rough Collies, plus B. J. Hewison EWBURN, and A. Newton HALGHTON in Smooth Collies joining the established kennels, and before the decade’s closed three dominant lady breeder/exhibitors in Miss Clair Molony WESTCARRS, Mrs Nadina George BEULAH and Mrs M Rhys who for many years had no affix but was later known for her HUGHLEY Smooths, had all added their names to this role on honour.
Just why Collies are rarely campaigned beyond their title is not recorded; perhaps it had something to do with a buoyant export market, or, more probably, the dominant kennels’ more commercial nature. Whatever the reason the twenties saw fewer than usual chasing illusive records, with only the Rough Collie males Thane of Athelney by Ch Poplar Perfection, and Ch Backwoods Fashion’s son Fashion’s Superior gaining significant numbers of the top awards.
