The adoption, by all Collie Clubs, of a new amplified
and unified Standard of Points started the decade
on a high note for the Collie World, whose hierarchy
had worked diligently for almost two years after
receiving notification from the Kennel Club’s
‘Council of Representatives’ that this was the wish of
the ruling body. Produced by a committee of
representatives from Collie Clubs and principal
kennel owners the scale of points had been replaced
by a new clause describing, in detail, the breed’s
general character and appearance. A further innovation
was the introduction of a colour clause detailing those which were considered objectionable. That this Standard was well received is irrefutable for it remained in operation until 1950 when the Kennel Club, having assumed responsibility for and copyright of all breed standards, introduced their own version.
The death of the popular Collie Club president Rev Hans F. Hamilton WOODMANSTERNE, one of the earliest Collie specialists, in 1912, cutting the last remaining tie with the breeds’ pioneers, so saddened Collie enthusiasts that they responded generously to Mr John H. Jacques’, Collie Club secretary, appeal for donations, not to exceed 1 guinea, (£1.05) towards a perpetual memorial trophy. The Rev Hans F. Hamilton Memorial Challenge Trophy is a splendid three handled Silver Cup and plinth standing 14½ inches (37cm) high and weighing 49½ ounces (1403gms), and is today presented annually to the Reserve to the Best In Show winner at the British Collie Club Championship Show each March.
